Thyme essential oil clears away the cobwebs of the mind with its piercing, medicinal aroma. Steam-distilled from the herb, it is traditionally used as an analgesic and antiseptic by the Greeks where its root word, thymon, means 'to fumigate'. It is also linked to the Greek thumus or courage and bravery, and indeed Roman soldiers would bathe in thyme-infused baths before battle. It was also sprayed on the clothes of soldiers during the Crimean War to protect against lice an disease. In the Middle Ages, St Hildegarde prescribed thyme for plague, leprosy and body lice. Sprigs of the herb would also be carried by European royalty to protect them from disease in public.
Thyme essential oil contains thymol, a powerful antiseptic that also contains antimicrobial properties. It is warming, and a known antispasmodic and expectorant (helpful in supporting the immunity, alleviating coughs, soothing arthritic aches or cramps). For this reason, it is helpful with the onset of infections and is beneficial when a drop or two is added to our Breathe blend if you're experiencing chronic fatigue, shallow breathing, coughs or bronchitis. It also boosts morale when you're ill, inspiring strength and fortitude.
Thyme oil is considered a nerve tonic, beneficial in cases of nervous depression, mental fatigue, headaches, and stress-related issues.
